Then the manager asked me, “So you also can’t remember what the customers said?” I said, “I can’t.” I was actually referring to the terminology in the furniture industry.

I was fired immediately. A senior colleague called me, so I told him about the misunderstanding. He then said, “They made a huge mistake because I know you have brains – I know you pretty well. I will speak to them.”

“No, don’t speak to them,” I said, “I don’t want to be there because I have my own clients – I’m a freelance writer. Working full-time in an unfamiliar industry doesn’t work for me. I only need a simple job that doesn’t require me to use my brain too much. My priority is freelance writing. A simple job that gives me some active work to do is better for my lifestyle because I shouldn’t sit in front of a laptop all day every day. Sitting is the new smoking now.”

Moral of the story

The employer rejected me, but they only rejected the version of me that they were aware of. They didn’t reject the real me. If they gave me more time, I would learn the terminology and become familiar with the product knowledge. I know this; I’m the most hard-working person I know. Yet in reality, they actually helped me by firing me. After I left the furniture store, within a few days, I got a simple job in fashion retail. This was actually exactly what I needed at that time.

Similarly, if a woman rejects you, she probably only rejects the version of you that she is aware of. She doesn’t necessarily know the real you yet. So this is her loss, not yours.

The only things that I didn’t learn very well at that time were terminology and product knowledge regarding furniture. That kind of thing requires more time and patience to learn and remember. I actually mastered the rest of the training about sales. My sales results were consistently the best when I started the fashion retail job later on. In other words, the furniture store’s manager gave me the ideal training, but I used the skill successfully elsewhere.
